You don't need an Apple router for media sharing, especially not in the era of connected speakers like the HomePod. A spokesperson told Engadget that the company might revisit WiFi routers if it can make a meaningful contribution to the space, but that's far from guaranteed. This isn't to say that Apple will never, ever return to making routers. Why buy an AirPort router unless you really value its software simplicity? ![]() High-end users, meanwhile, have an abundance of choices that includes both ridiculously fast conventional routers as well as mesh routers with greater coverage. WiFi routers are so commonplace that many internet providers give you a modem with the technology built in, and even the lowest-priced routers are adequate for most uses. Flash forward nearly two decades later and it's a different story. Apple introduced its AirPort line in 1999, when any wireless networking was a luxury. While Apple wasn't specific about the reasons for discontinuing the AirPort range, it's not hard to understand why: simply speaking, WiFi has become a commodity. An Apple spokesperson told Engadget that the company would continue to provide hardware and software support (such as patching bugs and vulnerabilities), but the devices themselves will only be available "while supplies last." The tech giant will post a series of knowledge base documents over the next few weeks to help guide customers wondering what to buy. The device is intended to be connected to a host computer and receive its power through a USB-A port during normal use.The longstanding rumors of Apple exiting the WiFi router market were true: the company is officially discontinuing its AirPort and Time Capsule base stations. The network adapter comes with 32 GB memory storage and 1.5 GB RAM. The device supports IEEE 802.11b/g/n radio, Bluetooth radio, and NFC. It has an integral battery, two gigabit ethernet ports, USB-C connector and antenna. Here’s how the FCC describes the network adapter: Apple has a lot of internal devices like this, and they aren’t intended ever to be sold to the public. It’s powered via USB-A, doesn’t support 5 GHz Wi-Fi bands, and doesn’t even have support for the 802.11ac wireless networking claims that Apple plans to unveil a new AirPort in November because the Cupertino-based company has applied to the FCC for a non-disclosure agreement that runs until November 2022. Last month, the Cupertino-based company filed a network adapter with the FCC, but it’s not intended for consumer use. iDrop News readers can get lifetime access to MS Office at 77% off the normal price.Get It Here Is Apple Making a New AirPort?Īpple is indeed working on network adapters, but they’re for internal use only. Sometimes we receive information that immediately leads us to believe that Apple is working on something, but once we dig a little deeper, we find that our initial conclusion wasn’t quite correct. I’m not saying he made up the AirPort leak, but I believe, and so do my sources, that he has some mixed information, and I want to clarify that. ![]() I believe that this Twitter account has real sources, he’s said some correct things, but he’s also shared false information because he likes to make a lot of assumptions. So, I reached out to some sources who would certainly know about a supposed new AirPort if Apple were to announce one, and they said they did not know anything about it and believed that this Twitter account may have messed up. However, it sounded a bit odd to me, especially since Apple discontinued the AirPort line of devices in 2018. I think Apple should start making routers again. That got my attention a few days ago, because I was really interested in this product. A week ago, a Twitter account named reported that Apple was planning to introduce new AirPorts this November, according to its sources.
